Verify your identity
Why Velvet checks your ID, how to do it, and what’s kept.
In the Velvet app
- Tap the wallet icon at the bottom of the screen, then Verify your identity.
- Read what you agree to, just above the button, then tap Agree and continue.
- Follow the verification steps: take a photo of your ID, then a live selfie.
- Back in Velvet, the page shows Checking your ID until the check finishes, usually within a few minutes. You can leave the page and check back in Wallet.
On the web
- Log in, open Account settings from the menu at the top, then Identity verification. On a phone, open the menu, then choose Settings.
- Choose Agree and verify, then follow the verification steps.
- Choose Refresh verification status until the page says you’re verified.
Some events are 18+ or 21+. When you’re verified, door staff can match you to your ID photo and see that you meet the age limit. Without it, you show a government photo ID at the door.
Verification lasts up to a year, or until your ID expires if that’s sooner.
With the current verification consent, Velvet keeps the encrypted verification result, including your ID details, full front/back ID images and selfie, until account deletion or an applicable identity-erasure request. Verification expiry, a replacement check, inactivity or a venue flag ending does not erase this reusable vault, except where a state’s biometric law sets an earlier limit, such as Illinois’s 3 years after your last interaction with Velvet. A check run by Stripe Identity keeps no ID images or selfie at Velvet. Earlier checks retain their original consent scope. A separate venue copy is kept for 21 days after your latest ID scan there, or while an applicable flag remains active, and is deleted when that flag ends. Applicable deletion rights and legal preservation still apply.
During an authorized door check, staff can briefly see the protected photo, your exact age and verified date of birth. Your social profile photo stays separate.
To request deletion of your verification data, open Settings in the app, then Your account & data, then Delete verification data. On the web, open Account settings, then Identity privacy. Digital verification and linked bands stop working; this does not cancel your tickets.
Deleting verification data or your account removes Velvet’s encrypted birth date and requests deletion of the ID check. If you were verified as under 21, a separate under-21-until date stays until your 21st birthday. Limited verification audit records remain.
